10.19.2007 - 9:22:00 AM - Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva confirmed by DirecTV

According to UFC Mania, DirecTV is running the following image as an advertisement for UFC 79. Silva is expected to announce his opponent this Saturday at UFC 77. Maybe DirecTV already let the cat out of the bag. The article also goes on to state that they have since removed the image from the site but it is quite interesting nonetheless. Yesterday I reported that the fight may have been pushed back to UFC 81. I guess only time will tell...

10.18.2007 - 3:40:00 PM - Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva moved back to February?

This is really starting to sound like a dick tease to me. Off again, on again, off again, on again. That is quite simply the only way to describe this fight. Good god i don't even give a shit if it happens anymore. First it was supposed to take place at UFC 76, then it was supposed to be at UFC 79 if Liddell beat Jardine. Well Liddell couldn't defend a kick so he got beat by jardine and then bout was called off. With all the injuries and what not there were rumors that it might actually happen at UFC 79. John Hackleman, Liddell's long time trainer, has even said that the fight was verbally agreed upon by both sides according to Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports and The Wrestling Observer. But now, according to the Gracie Mag, it may be pushed back to February for a main event at their Superbowl weekend card. Do you think that maybe this has something to do with Randy Couture's retirement?

Here's the article in its entirety:

UFC president, Dana White says he was not surprised by the sudden retirement of his organization's heavyweight champion. However, the director knows he will have to work hard to keep up the level of the UFC's popularity with the American public. That is because with the veteran's departure, Chuck Liddell's two recent losses and the fact that Tito Ortiz has not been going through too good of a phase for the last two years, the director is left without any great icons to fill the stadiums.

Therefore, it could be that the much awaited fight between Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell, if inked, might not take place in December (as the Brazilian forecast) and be pushed forward to February. This is because Dana White reserved a date to carry out the event on the eve of the Super Bowl (the popular American Football final), the event with the greatest audience on American TV. For this day, a Saturday, Randy Couture's title defense was planned, and White was negotiating with Fedor Emelianenko to be the challenger. Now, with neither of the two that he had planned on (Fedor signed with M-1 this week), the UFC big boss may call on Wand vs Liddell, thus needing to find a significant fight for the December 29 event.

10.17.2007 - 11:06:00 AM - Q&A With Former PRIDE Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva

Former PRIDE Middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva is set to make his return to the UFC at UFC 79. Rumors have been going around that there is still a possibility that he will fight Chuck Liddell at UFC 79.

MMAJunkie.com recently asked its readers to submit questions for Wanderlei. He recently had a Q&A session with Yahoo! Sports. When asked about a rematch with Rampage he answered the following question:

Q: Does your previous success in fights against the UFC light heavyweight champion Quentin "Rampage" Jackson make a potential title match with a fighter you've dominated extremely appealing to you? Finally, other than yourself, who would you list as the top five MMA fighters pound-for-pound in the world today?

WS: Yes, it's a very appealing fight to me. Because the two fights I had with him were good fights. And now he is the champ, so for me it will be a pleasure to fight him. I don't like him very much. So yes, it is an extremely appealing fight for me, because I would get to defeat him and win the belt.
I would say the top fighters pound-for-pound in the light heavyweight class are Shogun, Liddell and Lyoto Machida. Other fighters that I think are good are (Takanori) Gomi, (Gilbert) Melendez, Ninja (Murilo Rua) and Cyborg (Fedor Emelianenko).

When The Axe Murderer was asked about a possible fight with Shogun. He responded to the following question:

Q: Are you worried about receiving too many concussions and how that will effect you later in life? Are you still affiliated with Chute Boxe and Shogun Rua in any way or are you all separate now? Would you fight Shogun if the UFC asked?
WS: I have only one problem in my head, and that is that I
am only more hungry to win. I'm training very hard this time around, because I
need to give my next victory to my fans. I am not affiliated with Chute Boxe. We
are separated, because I wanted to start my own team. I don't want to fight
Shogun, because he is a good friend. I've trained with him for 10 years, so for
me that fight would be very hard. There are a lot of other light heavyweights I
could fight.
You can read the rest of the article over at Yahoo! Sports.
